Speaking
of Dining
Why?
To bring back to Florida 96 gallons of fresh grape
juice from Fulkerson Winery, located on Lake Seneca in the
Finger Lakes Region of New York State. This juice
represents some of the most popular varietals from the
region: Cayuga, Concord, Delaware, Gewurztraminer,
Pinot Noir, and Rosette. The juice is
transported in the back of their SUV in 16 plastic,
six gallon carboys and since the juice has been sulfited and
chilled to 38 degrees before it is picked up, it stays very
cool for its trip to Florida. Keeping the car AC up
and running--despite the danger of frostbite to the SUV's
occupants!--the juice temp only rises to around 56
degrees before it is brought into the winery. (This
year, because of the cold outside temp, no report of
frostbite. Outside temp was just perfect for
transporting the juice.) Once the juice is safely at
home in the winery in Mt. Dora, yeast is added to the juice
and the fermentation process begins. These wines will
be available for purchase toward the end of December or the
first part of January. Those of you wishing
to savor this very special wine--not usually available
outside of the state of New York--can check the winery's
website
Thompsons have made the trip to New York. Many of
their customers are transplanted New Yorkers who are unable
to purchase these native American grape wines locally so the
interest has been very positive. Come on in and try
them for yourselves in Mt. Dora's ONLY winery--and only one
of two wineries in all of Lake County. An added
incentive is that these wines are not available anywhere
else in the local area---maybe not anywhere else in Florida!
